About Us/ À propos de nous

SGI Canada is a constituent organization of Soka Gakkai International, a lay Buddhist network with members in over 192 countries and territories around the world.

The core message that Shakyamuni (the historical Buddha) revealed in the Lotus Sutra was that everyone has the potential to manifest their enlightened nature (Buddhahood). Nichiren Daishonin, a 13th century Buddhist reformer, further clarified this teaching and established a means for everyone to tap into this inherent nature by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. By chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo we can transform suffering into joy by bringing forth our inherent life force—wisdom, courage and compassion.

SGI Canada centres are located in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City. Various meetings and other activities take place each month, including free introductory seminars for people interested in learning about Nichiren Buddhism and the SGI.

La Soka Gakkai internationale (SGI) est une organisation mondiale fondée sur la philosophie humaniste du bouddhisme de Nichiren qui s’attache à promouvoir la paix, la culture et l’éducation. La SGI du Canada, qui est l’organisation constitutive de la SGI au Canada, est un organisme de bienfaisance enregistré.

Le message essentiel que révèle Shakyamuni (le Bouddha historique) dans le Sûtra du Lotus est que tout être humain peut manifester sa nature éveillée ou illuminée (bouddhéité). Nichiren Daishonin, réformateur bouddhiste du XIIIe siècle, précise cet enseignement et établit un moyen pour chacun de puiser dans cette nature inhérente en récitant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. En récitant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, nous pouvons transformer les souffrances en joie en faisant ressortir notre force vitale inhérente faite de sagesse, de courage et de compassion.

La propagation du bouddhisme de Nichiren s’est faite grâce aux trois présidents fondateurs de la Soka Gakkai : Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda et Daisaku Ikeda (président de la SGI). En moins de 80 ans, ils ont bâti un mouvement mondial qui regroupe des personnes de toutes origines et tous milieux. Ils ont rendu le message profond de Nichiren Daishonin et du Sûtra du Lotus accessible et pertinent pour l’humanité dans le monde moderne, par-delà les différences nationales, ethniques et culturelles.
